Running a restaurant requires careful planning and strategy, not to mention tons of hard work. One of the best ways to set yourself up for success as a restaurateur is to take a long hard look at the way you run your restaurant and be honest about its effectiveness.  Here are some tips to avoid when managing a restaurant.

1. Don’t do everything yourself

It is OK to ask for help. Don’t forget that asking for help is not a sign of weakness, no one is going to think less of you. In fact, they may think more of you. Employees respect a manager that knows how to ask for help! Thinking you have to do everything by yourself is only an effective management strategy if you work by yourself. Lean on your team, restaurant staffs are known for being supportive. It will make you a better manager in the long run.

2. Don’t settle for average employees
We know how difficult it is to find quality talent in this industry. However, your staff is the backbone of your restaurant. It starts with not settling for mediocre employees. As an industry, we haven’t done a very good job of marketing the restaurant business as an attractive career choice, especially for millenials. But each person in your restaurant has a vital role to play in how the restaurant functions. This is why you should carefully evaluate any potential employee before they are hired. Each of your employees is the face of your restaurant or organization. Who you hire to directly interact with your guests is one of the most important decisions you make as a manager in your restaurant. They have the potential to keep customers returning or not. Don’t fall under pressure to fill a position when you don’t have a proper candidate, quality is almost always better than quantity.

3. Not taking social media seriously
We’ve talked about Social Media time and time again.  It is no joke and using it is a way to become a hit in the restaurant industry! That Instagram post you put up last week got plenty of likes, but that was last week. It is essential for a restaurant to have a digital presence in this day and age. Leave time and a budget to advertise yourself on Social Media. When it comes to restaurant social media, frequent, thoughtful posts will keep your restaurant relevant . One of the best ways to stay on top of Social Media is to pick a few days each week on which you’ll post to your Social Media accounts or schedule your posts ahead of time (this is only possible with Facebook/Twitter). This small change, can lead to some big results for your restaurant.
